Voorhees College is a private, historically black college found in Denmark, South Carolina. The school is affiliated with the Episcopal Church. Voorhees College gets its accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The school was established in 1897, when Jessie Dorsey and Elizabeth Evelyn Wright established the Denmark Industrial School for African Americans. The school was located in a rural area and small town, and most of the school was modeled after Tuskegee Institute. The school started in a second floor of an old store.
In 1902, a New Jersey philanthropist named Ralph Voorhees donated to the school enough capital to buy land and build their own buildings. Then in 1904 the South Carolina General Assembly renamed the school after Voorhees and incorporated the name as the Voorhees Industrial Institute for Colored Youths. The school was affiliated with the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina in 1924. Then in 1947, the school changed its name to Voorhees School and Junior College. Then in 1962, the school added more courses and more departments and it got accreditation as the Voorhees College.
The school is divided into several Academic Divisions and Programs including Division of Education, Division of General Studies, Division of Social Sciences, Division of Business and the Division of Natural Sciences.
Voorhees College is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The school competes in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. Voorhees just recently joined the GCAC in 2013. The school fields teams in several sports including men's cross country, baseball, cheerleading, basketball, and track and field; as well as women's sports including volleyball, basketball, softball, cheerleading, cross country, and track and field.
